Fall Into Trends

KileyWell now that fashion week's over it's time to remember what a magical experience it was. Fashion week is like a holiday, but unlike halloween it comes 2 weeks out of the year. All participants do try to look extreme in their clothes to get attention, and just like halloween there are some outfits that make you cringe. And that's before you even get into the tents! I went to the Academy of Art University Fashion Week Fall Collection show back in the spring. You heard me correctly, seasons flip flop in the fashion world. Fall Fashion Week is actually in the spring, because fashion magazines need to get their september issue ready months in advance and need to know what the trends are. You may think you're a trendsetter, and you very well might be- but the real trend setters are the people who don't follow the trends, they create the trends. I'm talking about the designers who create them, the models who death glare and strut down the runway wearing them, the photographers who snap pictures of them... These are the real movers and shakers of fashion. They don't just predict what customers will like, they decide what the greater public should buy into. And it works. Trends come from imagination, innovation... And copying. Inspiration comes from many places. Nature, Art, History, Foreign Places... It's figuring what advantages of using a particular fabric are, what fit is most flattering for the target market's body shape, and how to deliver this to the masses.

I also returned to the Fashion Week Scene this September for the
Academy of Art University Spring show. I saw a lot of nudes and longer
hemlines. You may have seen crazy colors and short hemlines lately,
but fashion likes to change from one extreme to another. You may have
noticed Maxi Dresses that are down to shoes. Especially if you hit the
streets of the fashion capitol of the world (NYC of course!) like I
did this past summer. It was a bit of a shock when I had my super
short dress and was lost in a sea of maxi trendsetters.

What about you, do you think you're a trendsetter in fashion? True
trendsetters in my opinion don't follow the trends. That's how new
ones get started.

Good news, I'll now be a DMS Fashion Correspondent, the youngest one
on the team! Look out for more posts by me, and check out my store
